AMERICANS (taking any bets.) is a response to the troubling state of contemporary American society: the callous, the ignorant, the boastful, the flippant. The cruel, the myopic, the xenophobic. And perhaps most troubling, those who remain disengaged, asleep to the consequences of what is happening around them.
The composition consists of overlapping fragments of printed material, much of it obscured, interrupted, or rendered unreadable. What might otherwise communicate information becomes a layered accumulation of silence. Torn edges, partial typography, and largely blank surfaces suggest both the suppression of meaning and a collective inability, or unwillingness, to confront uncomfortable truths. At the bottom of the composition, two figures lie sleeping, seemingly undisturbed by the accumulation of material above them.
Their sleep, however, is deliberately ambiguous. Are they indifferent, willfully ignorant, or simply exhausted? In a culture saturated with information, misinformation, cruelty, and relentless political spectacle, disengagement may be as much a consequence of psychological fatigue as of complacency. The work considers the possibility that the overwhelming nature of contemporary life encourages withdrawal, even as that withdrawal allows troubling conditions to persist.
The title introduces a further note of cynicism. Taking any bets suggests a society whose future has become uncertain enough to invite speculation, as though the consequences of collective action, or inaction, have become a wager. Ultimately, the work questions the relationship between awareness and responsibility, between the cruelty of those who exercise power and the silence of those who endure, ignore, or enable it. It asks whether Americans are sleeping through their own undoing, or have simply become too overwhelmed to remain awake.
